SDG 15

Goal 15: Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

Targets to be of relevance for Austria in the context of meetPASS:
15.1 By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements
15.2 By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally
15.4 By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development

Integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning (SDG 13.2) could affect the achievment of SDG 15 or vice versa.
Possible relationships between these two SDGs are given below.
Please read each suggested relationship/claim/hypothesis and indicate your assessment of them.

You can add further comments at the end.

Forests play a large role in reducing the impacts of climate change, presenting a significant carbon sink and also reducing the severity of natural disasters.
How would you assess this relationship/claim/hypothesis?

Afforestation will lead to increased carbon absorption.
How would you assess this relationship/claim/hypothesis?

The expansion of agrofuels production often involves the degradation of large areas for crop production and primeval forests (as, for example, for palm oil expansion). This frequently occurs in subtropical regions.
How would you assess this relationship/claim/hypothesis?

Soil restoration measures bring positive mitigation impacts, as they usually lead to an enhancement in soil carbon stocks.
How would you assess this relationship/claim/hypothesis?

Mitigation practices implemented locally for soil carbon sequestration increase the ability of soils to hold soil moisture and to better withstand erosion, droughts and floods.
